“…184 Interestingly, this is not seen in the same amount as in cirrhotic patients in the ICU. 185 Serum procalcitonin levels seem to be a useful marker of infection in decompensated cirrhotic patients 186 ; data regarding ALF patients are scarce.…”

“…For surgical patients with pre-existing liver diseases or scheduled for hepatectomy, PCT could also be valuable in anticipating surgical outcomes. Patients with liver disease, especially cirrhosis, are prone to bacterial infection, thus early diagnosis of infection in patients with underlying liver diseases is necessary ( Elefsiniotis et al, 2006 ). Besides, in 2 days after abdominal surgery, the value of PCT is increased due to bile leakage of residual liver, causing abdominal bacteria pollution, which may lead to local or systemic infections ( Meisner et al, 1998 ; Jekarl et al, 2013 ).…”

“…Oruc et al [15] reported that serum PCT levels were within normal ranges in both steatohepatitis and steatosis patients, although serum CRP levels were reported to be elevated in steatohepatitis patients and in severely obese patients with diabetes [8]. Elefsinoitis et al [9] reported that serum PCT levels in chronic hepatitis C patients under INF-α plus Ribavirin treatment remained within normal limits (< 0.5 ng/mL), although serum PCT levels slightly declined within the normal range in sustained virological responders. Elefsiniotis et al [31] also reported that acute alcoholic hepatitis with a cirrhotic background as well as acute viral hepatitis with chronic liver disease without proved bacterial infection induces mild elevation of serum PCT levels (> 0.5 ng/mL).…”

“…In bacterial infections such as SBP in LC patients, renal impairment is one of the prognostic factors, and type-1 hepatorenal syndrome is associated with a particularly poor prognosis [6,7]. On the contrary, the prevalence of infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria has increased in patients with LC in recent years [8,9]. Moreover, a delay in the diagnosis of a bacterial infection is often fatal in LC patients [10].…”
