Service controls interfaces in housing: usability and engagement tool development

Abstract: Domestic buildings are increasingly complex; saturated with services that need coherent control if design and inhabitants' goals are to be achieved. The evidenced inappropriate use of controls linked with performance gap suggests that effective methods for assessing the inhabitant relationship with control interfaces for services are needed within building performance evaluation and practice studies. The development of a bespoke domestic usability tool over two iterations is presented, demonstrating new insigh… Show more

“…For him, this shows that affordances need to be understood as being relational: they arise from interactions between people, the technologies and the envisioned designs of the artefacts in a practical context (Ingold 2018). In the view of Ingold, the real environment is a lived place of activities, where skills develop, and understandings of affordances are grown (Parchoma 2014;Baborska-Narozny and Stevenson 2019). By doing so, the concept of affordances becomes more closely related to the field of anthropology and phenomenology and emphasises the role of body and skills, as situated in their structured surroundings (Tweed 2013).…”

“…Many of these studies include SHT purchased by the households themselves; however, more future new and retrofitted buildings will include built-in smart systems for controlling energy and indoor climate. As Baborska-Narożny and Stevenson [ 14 ] established, these systems have a growing impact on building energy performance, and their malfunctioning assumes a large part in explaining performance gaps in terms of higher-than-predicted energy consumption. Energy efficiency is thus linked to residents’ use/non-use and learning related to the devices.…”

“…Energy efficiency is thus linked to residents’ use/non-use and learning related to the devices. One suggestion for improving technology is to perform usability tests on smart systems, to establish the extent to which users and managers understand the system and use feedback about poor usability to improve future design [ 14 ].…”

“…Construction processes have been likened to design processes as more commonly seen in design (Mangnus et al, 2022;Pihl, 2019). Baborska-Narożny and Stevenson (2019) recommended co-learning among all stakeholders (including residents) in ZE construction processes in order to increase the usability of home interfaces. However, Bridi et al (2022) and Ortiz et al (2020) report that, in particular, companies are sceptical of user-centred approaches for several reasons.…”
