Setting up a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) for a healthcare system

Abstract: WLAN can help the medical professionals to improve their working efficiency and reduce medical errors. In this paper, the important issues of deploying WLAN in hospitals are discussed. It gives a comprehensive overview of how to set up the mobility, Quality of Service (QoS) and security of the WLAN for a healthcare system. IEEE 802.11e standard and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability ACT (HIPAA) regulations are discussed and some suggestions are given to meet the specific requirements of a heal… Show more

“…When designing a WLAN indoors a number of factors are considered. The most important consideration is the ability to transmit data to mobile devices at as high a rate as possible, without losing quality of service (QoS) (Wang and Du, 2005). However, this is dependent on installing as little extra infrastructure as possible.…”

“…LAN provides the convenient mobility of patient records, quality of service and security for a healthcare system (Wang and Du, 2005). Since the NHI smart card project was implemented in 2004, healthcare providers have been able to use a special line to upload and use medical data.…”

“…Unfortunately, with the ever-growing pervasiveness of information technology, problems such as these will only continue to become worse. Some industries such as health care will see tremendous growth in wireless access (Wang and Du, 2005) and as result will have to be more concerned with the legal issues of IP2PFS. With this in mind, both universities and businesses alike should give serious thought to their participation in these activities and develop policies and procedures to limit the liability of the university to the internet with regard to copyrighted materials.…”
