Settlement of Crushed Straw

Abstract: This article is focused on an experimental measurement of settlement of blown insulation from crushed straw. Straw has appeared like building material in recent years. It is ecological and cheap building material which is required for sustainable construction. Straw is usually used in form of bales. These are generally used like thermal insulation filling the supporting structure. An alternative to straw bales can be crushed straw. Crushed straw is not used in building industry currently. Its thermal insulatin… Show more

“…The bulk density of the samples was 90 kg·m −3 . The reason for choosing the bulk density of 90 kg/m 3 was the finding that no settling would occur over time [ 18 ]. The sample was ignited, and after moving the burner away, the sample was immediately extinguished (see Figure 3 a).…”

“…The application machine can be set exactly on the insulation material parameters. Because of this setting, the optimal bulk density of the insulation in the structure can be obtained to prevent it from settling [ 18 ]. Another advantage of this type of insulation, compared to boards and mats, is the minimisation of waste during application.…”

“…While investigating using natural fibers, the possibility to employ blown-in straw, combined with a concrete basement and a steel frame structure, also has been studied. Today, similar technological solutions still have a niche application in Europe for one-floor structures [41][42][43].…”

“…After measurement is calculated thermal resistance value from measured values according to the formula (3). From the thermal resistance values then can be calculated value of the thermal conductivity coefficient of the material according to the formula (6). The values may then be compared with the data producer of the measured material.…”
