Sustainable development in civil engineering is the clear and necessary goal of the current generation. There are many possibilities for reducing the use of depletable resources. One of them is to use renewable and recyclable materials on a larger scale in the construction industry. One possibility is the application of natural thermal insulators. A typical example is a crushed straw, which is generated as agricultural waste in the Czech Republic. Due to its small dimensions and good thermal insulation parameters, this material can also be used as blown thermal insulation. The research aims to examine the fire resistance of crushed straw as blown insulation. The single-flame source fire test results, thermal attack by a single burning item (SBI) test and large-scale test of a perimeter wall segment are shown. The results show that blown insulation made of crushed straw meets the requirements of fire protection. In addition, crushed straw can be also used to protect load-bearing structures due to its behaviour. This article also shows the production process of crushed straw used as blown insulation in brief.

Today, the main issue of providing adequate and affordable housing is to go beyond the mere offer of basic shelters, intending to create sustainable and durable settlements. Due to the fragile and uncertain nature of its social, political and economic context, characterized by the lack of common shared legislative references and business strategies in the housing sector, Somalia is a challenging reality to be explored and improved. This paper describes the outcomes of the BECOMe project, intending to propose sustainable solutions for mass-housing design for new sustainable settlements in Mogadishu, involving local entrepreneurs, social organizations and renewable energy. In detail, social, environmental and economic key sustainability requirements (KSRs) for mass-housing are identified first. Then, the most appropriate climate-responsive design and construction technologies at the building level, tailored to the Mogadishu context, are selected; the outcomes are applied to a specific case-study building, assessing energy and cost performances to pave the way for implementation projects in Somalia.

One of the methods used for determining of the thermal conductivity coefficient value of building materials is the Calibrated and Guarded Hot Box method. This method is based on the principle of measuring the heat flux density that passes through the test specimen at a temperature difference between warm and cool parts of the measuring box. For measuring of thermal conductivity coefficient is at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of VŠB-TUO used the Cool Box. Measuring in Cool Box uses the same principle of measuring as Calibrated and Guarded Hot Box. For creating temperature difference during the measurements at the Cool Box is not used heat, but cold. Measurement of the thermal conductivity coefficient by a Cool Box is very complex in terms of measurement accuracy. That the resulting values as accurate as possible, it is necessary to calibrate itself refrigerated cabinets and all sensors that are used for measurements. This paper describes the principles of calibration of Cool Box and other components, which are used for measuring the thermal conductivity coefficient of selected natural building materials. Determination of the thermal insulation properties of selected materials is part of a long-term research focused on conventional and unconventional natural building materials.
