Seventeen new dragonfly records from Colombia and the confirmation of the synonymy ofPhilogenia monotisandP. tinalandia(Insecta: Odonata)

Abstract: During 2.5 months of intensive fieldwork in Colombia (departments of Cauca, Nariño, and Putumayo, South America) from January to March 2017, we visited 13 localities and collected 291 specimens of 68 species of Odonata, including 17 new records for the country. We report range expansions for several species assessed as data deficient or under some degree of threat by the IUCN Red List. Furthermore, we confirmed that Philogenia tinalandia is a junior synonym of P. monotis, thus solving a longstanding enigma. We… Show more

“…Although previous studies have addressed the need to increase exploration and collection (e.g. Bota-Sierra et al 2016, 2018a, we are unaware of how complete odonate sampling is in the country. Given this, the aim of this paper was to assess the inventory of Colombian odonate species at the levels of country, department, geographic region and endemic species, using rarefaction curves.…”

“…We present a list of damselflies and dragonflies from the Southern Serranía de Chiribiquete National Natural Park. This includes 17 new species records for the country thus augmenting the total number of species from 452 (Amaya-Vallejo et al 2018;Bota-Sierra et al 2018a, 2018b, 2019a, 2019b Specimens were captured using insect nets during the sunny hours of the day in areas around aquatic habitats, stored in paper envelopes, photographed live, and steeped in acetone for 24 hours. Specimens are deposited at the Museo de Colecciones Biológicas de la Universidad del Atlántico (UARC, Barranquilla, Colombia).…”

“…Exploration of Colombian odonates has flourished since 2000 (Palacino-Rodríguez 2016). More than 437 species of odonates have been recorded from Colombia (Bota-Sierra et al 2018a, 2018b. However, knowledge of the local distribution of the species still requires much study.…”

“…In the central zone of the Pacific Region, 38 species in 11 families were listed by Pérez-Gutiérrez et al (2007). Other studies (Bota-Sierra and Novelo-Gutiérrez 2017;Bota-Sierra et al 2018a), especially in the central and southern zones of the Pacific Region, have recorded 73 species in 12 families, with 17 newly recorded species from the country. More recently, Bota-Sierra et al (2019) recorded around 60 species from Chocó Department.…”
