“…In the quantitative analyses of eight studies, maternal prenatal depression increased the risk of depression among offspring (OR = 1.36; 95% CI 1.07–1.72, k = 8, N = 36,985) (Betts, Salom, et al., 2015 ; Herva et al., 2008 ; Kingsbury et al., 2016 ; Pawlby et al., 2009 ; Pearson et al., 2013 , 2013 ; Plant et al., 2015 ; Taka‐Eilola Nee Riekki et al., 2019 ; Zohsel et al., 2017 ). There was a statistically significant heterogeneity ( I 2 = 76%, p < .01).…”

“…Key characteristics (ie, title, author information, study design, sample size, location, measuring scales, mean ages of offspring at assessment, and number of male and female participants) of the included articles were reported based on the MOOSE guidelines 63 and are shown in Table 1. 39,42,43,[60][61][62] Primary Analysis (Figure 2). The posterior probability (PP) that the pooled OR was greater than 1 was 98.6%; the posterior distribution for the pooled OR in Figure 3 provides a graphic summary of the association.…”

“…Second, a single standard diagnostic criterion for depression or major depressive disorder in both the mothers and offspring was not specified. For example, Taka-Eilola et al 62 used a single structured question during antenatal visits for its 1966 birth cohort study due to the absence of specific screening scales at the time. Although this could be a potential limitation, it also makes the study more generalizable by being less dependent on a single diagnostic method.…”

“…Chronic stress during early life, such as exposure to prenatal and postnatal depression or deficits in parental care, can have persistent adverse behavioural effects (Murgatroyd et al., 2010, 2015; Peña et al., 2017). Such long‐term stress‐related disruptions in behaviour have been documented in both human and rodent studies of offspring exposed to a variety of early‐life stressors, including maternal depression (Hammen & Brennan, 2003; Peña et al., 2017; Raposa et al., 2014; Taka‐Eilola (nèe Riekki) et al, 2019). Offspring subjected to early‐life stress have increased susceptibility to maternal depression themselves, suggesting genetic and/or epigenetic mechanisms by which maternal stress could be intergenerationally inherited (Champagne, 2008; Elwood et al., 2019; Kluczniok et al., 2016; Nephew et al., 2015; Séjourné et al., 2011).…”
