“…These data contrast with in vitro studies demonstrating that serum with hyperbilirubinemia reduced the mitogenic activity of osteoblast-like cells (5). Some clinical studies also showed that osteoporosis is more frequent in cholestatic patients than in non-cholestatic patients with liver disease (18)(19)(20). However, the present data agree with previous clinical and experimental studies that did not detect an association between cholestasis and bone mass loss (21,22).…”

“…Previous studies have reported that cholestatic liver disease, including primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis are risk factors for osteoporosis (21)(22)(23). However, in the current study, the prevalence of osteoporosis tended to be higher in cholestatic disease than in non-cholestatic disease, although there was no significant difference identified.…”

“…It has been reported that osteoporosis occurs in approximately 20%-30% of patients with PBC [185,186] , and older age and severity of the disease were the main risk factors for osteoporosis [187] . Moreover, there were 2-fold relative increases in the risk of bone fractures in patients with PBC compared with the general population [188] .…”
