Sex-specific parenting and depression evoked by preoptic inhibitory neurons

Abstract: Preoptic GABAergic neurons promote maternal behaviors in females mice Activation of preoptic GABAergic neurons induces pup-directed aggression in malesProjection pattern of preoptic GABAergic neurons is sexually dimorphic Depression-like behaviors are provoked by stimulation of preoptic GABAergic neurons

“…There were no behavioral or health issues found in VGAT-Cre and PTH2R-Cre mice crossed with reporter mice as we described previously. 34 All of the mice were 100-150 days old when sacrificed. Animals were kept under standard laboratory conditions with 12-h light, 12-h dark periods (lights on at 6.00 a.m.), and supplied with food and drinking water ad libitum.…”

“…The MeA, a crucial area for infanticidal behavior modulations, is a major site for the integration and processing of the environmental sensory information received, and this site then relays the informative neuronal output to the VMH to be analyzed to trigger the associated behavioral response. Although considerable evidence shows that the AOB predominantly sends axons to the MeA, which in turn projects to downstream areas such as the BNST, the medial preoptic area (MPOA), and the VMH, areas involved in controlling infanticidal behaviors ( Bergan et al., 2014 ; Chen et al., 2019 ; Choi et al., 2005 ; Dimen et al., 2021 ; Isogai et al., 2018 ; Kohl, 2020 ; Raam and Hong, 2021 ; Tachikawa et al., 2013 ; Trouillet et al., 2019 ; Wu et al., 2014 ), it is becoming increasingly clear that the MeA also directly or indirectly receives some MOB inputs ( Dhungel et al., 2011 ; Inokuchi et al., 2017 ; Kang et al., 2009 , 2011 ; Keshavarzi et al., 2015 ; Matsuo et al., 2015 ; Mucignat-Caretta, 2021 ; Perez-Gomez et al., 2015 ; Pro-Sistiaga et al., 2007 ; Shao et al., 2021 ; Thompson et al., 2012 ).…”

“…Indeed, in many species, caregiving requires both an increase in offspring approach motivation and a decrease in offspring avoidance [42][43][44][45]. The mPOA provides the GABAergic projections to the VTA that are critical for disinhibiting retrieval of pups [46,47], as well as provides the GABAergic projections to the periaqueductal grey that suppress fear and anxiety [41]. DA acting within the mPOA can also regulate maternal behaviour.…”
