Sexual Function in Young Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis: Does Disability Matter?

Abstract: Healthcare professionals involved in MS, should assess patients for SD. Further studies should be fostered to better quantify SD etiology, the degree of sexual impairment, and its impact on patients' quality of life to "overcome" this problem.

“…For instance, female multiple sclerosis patients also seem to have a high prevalence of sexual dysfunction (32% in a recent study of 85 subjects, also using the FSFI) . As in our study and others in PD patients, in multiple sclerosis patients, no correlations have been found between sexual dysfunction and disease duration, lesion burden, and disability, although a link between depression and sexual dysfunction in these patients has also been suggested . In fact, a previous diagnosis of depression was meaningfully more frequent in female PD patients when compared with controls.…”

“…Young adults with MS particularly may see SD as the most negative feature of the illness, given the variety of disturbances of sexual function, and the indirect effects on mental health, quality of life and intimate relationships, at a time of life when sexual activity may be at a peak and seen as particularly important. Sexual function is however often not a standard part of the consultation with healthcare professionals for PwMS [27], despite calls for its inclusion [2830], and is therefore frequently underdiagnosed [31]. …”

“…The degree and level of disability of patients can be evaluated according to the expanded disability status scale (EDSS), and sexual dysfunction (SD) is often ignored in patients with multiple sclerosis (12). It is generally believed that the higher the score of EDSS, the higher the prevalence of sexual dysfunction, and it is suggested that nursing researchers should pay attention to the evaluation of sexual dysfunction, quantify the degree of sexual injury, and improve the QOL of patients with multiple sclerosis (13).…”
