Sexual Homicides in China: Exploring the Offender, Victim, and Offense Characteristics

Abstract: Nearly all information available on sexual homicides are limited to studies conducted in the West. Little is known about sexual homicides that occurred in China. The current study is arguably the first to explore the offender, victim, and offense characteristics of Chinese sexual homicides. Over a period of 23 years (1994 to 2016), the data of 59 cases collected from two data sources (i.e., published Chinese case reports and police data) are examined. Findings indicate that heterosexual assaults are far more p… Show more

“…Sexual homicides are rare in China yet have attracted extensive public interest and media attention. Scientific information about sexual homicides in China is, however, scarce; to date, only one study has been published (Chan, Li, Liu, Lu, & Jia, ). On the basis of 59 cases in published Chinese case reports and police data from three selected regions (Municipality of Shanghai, Guangdong Province, and Hubei Province) over a period of 23 years (1994–2016), heterosexual‐oriented sexual murders (86%) were more prevalent in China than homosexually oriented sexual murders.…”

“…Sexual release may take different forms, which include violent sexual release (e.g. sadistic behaviour) through the acting out of the offenders' deviant sexual fantasies as part of their expression of power or anger, or a combination of both, to dominate, punish, control, humiliate, degrade, and torture their victims (Chan et al, ; Chan, Heide, & Beauregard, ). Although there may be more than one motive for such killing, in many cases, a primary driving force is often evident (Chan, ; Chan & Heide, ; Meloy, ).…”

“…Relative to non‐mutilation sexual murderers, those who performed victim mutilation were least likely to be motivated by financial gain (e.g., money). Consistent with the extant literature, post‐mortem mutilation and dismemberment of the victim suggests that the sexual murderers may be acting out their sadistic fantasies (Chan, , , ; Chan, Heide, & Beauregard, ). These are seen as common post‐murder ritualistic behaviors against child victims (Beauregard, Stone, Proulx, & Michaud, ).…”

“…Despite the tremendous increase of academic attention in terms of numbers of empirical studies conducted on the subject (i.e., from 32 published in 1986–2007 (22‐year period), Chan & Heide, , to 47 empirical studies published in 2008–2015 (8‐year period), Chan, ), little is known about the offending dynamics of sexual homicides that occurred in China. To date, only two studies have been published on Chinese sexual homicides (Chan, Li, Liu, & Lu, ; Chan, Li, Liu, Lu, & Jia, ).…”
