Sexual Offender Treatment Effectiveness Within Cognitive-Behavioral Programs: A Meta-Analytic Investigation of General, Sexual, and Violent Recidivism

Abstract: The current sexual offender literature focuses on recidivism reduction in an effort to increase public safety. While cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) programs are considered a mainstream treatment method, it is essential to study recidivism as an indicator of treatment effectiveness. This meta-analysis examines research published since 1970 to determine the overall effectiveness of treatments in reducing recidivism among adult male sexual offenders. Decade of implementation and CBT treatment features are als… Show more

“…The strengths-based approach to rehabilitation reinforces that rehabilitation is a process rather than an outcome [28••]. This reinforces that behaviour change is learnt and that Cognitive-Behavioural approaches, in which most programmes/interventions for individuals convicted of a sexual offence are rooted, are a logical way forward [93,94]. A strengths-based approach is important in rehabilitation because it emphasises that a person is more than their offence, that they have strengths as well as deficits, and that by building upon these strengths they can change their problematic behaviour; therefore, increasing their ability to successfully integrate into the community.…”

“…Die Wirksamkeit der Therapie mit Straftätern ist empirisch abgesichert [1][2][3]. Wirksame Behandlungsansätze sind in der Regel in übergreifende forensische Rehabilitationsmodelle eingebettet, mit denen Vorhersagen über die Größenordnung von Behandlungseffekten möglich sind.…”

“…Treatment Approach As we noted in our previous review, recent meta-analytic research continues to support the use of cognitive-behavioral intervention (CBT) to generate optimal recidivism reductions (Gannon et al, 2019;Hanson et al, 2002;Harrison et al, 2020;Lösel & Schmucker, 2005;Schmucker & Lösel, 2008). Furthermore, CBT treatment from the 1990s was recently found to be more effective in reducing sexual and violent recidivism than was treatment from the 1980s (Harrison et al, 2020), and most research now suggests that older programs are less effective than more recent treatment approaches (Hanson et al, 2002(Hanson et al, , 2009. It therefore appears that CBT treatment is becoming more effective over time, perhaps as a result of programmatic changes that are based on research.…”
