Sexual precocity: sex incidence and aetiology.

Abstract: This was defined as the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics in a normal sequence associated with early, but otherwise normal, activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis. Endocrine studies revealed a dominance of LH over FSH. Stimulation with GnRH in these children resulted in a response similar to that seen in normally timed puberty. Ninety one girls presented with central precocious puberty and 85 were idiopathic. The remaining six had central precocious puberty secondary to previously di… Show more

“…A similar finding has been reported in previous studies in Nigeria 6,11 . Reports from other parts of Africa and the world indicate that thyroid disorders [13][14][15][16] , overweight and obesity 17 , and precocious puberty 18 are all more common in girls than boys. These specific childhood and adolescence endocrine disorders were among the leading five types of endocrine disorders found in our series.…”

“…CPP is gonadotropin-dependent early maturation and results primarily from activation of HPGA, whereas PPP is gonadotropin-independent; the causes of PPP include both endogenous sources such as gonadal tumors, adrenal tumors, and congenital disorders and exposure to exogenous steroids (5). Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which is produced in the hypothalamus and acts on the pituitary gland, stimulates the pulsatile production and release of gonadotropins including luteinizing hormones (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH) to maintain normal reproductive functions (1).…”

“…PP can be divided into two types, central precocious puberty (CPP, also called "true precocious puberty") and peripheral precocious puberty (PPP, or "pseudo precocious puberty"), depending on whether or not the HPGA is involved (5). CPP is gonadotropin-dependent early maturation and results primarily from activation of HPGA, whereas PPP is gonadotropin-independent; the causes of PPP include both endogenous sources such as gonadal tumors, adrenal tumors, and congenital disorders and exposure to exogenous steroids (5).…”

“…A distribuição de acordo com o sexo (meninas para meninos) é estimada em 3:1 (25) e 23:1 (26). A distribuição entre as formas idiopática e orgânica varia largamente: 69 a 98% de casos idiopáti-cos em meninas e 0 a 60% em meninos.…”
