Sexual Violence on the Move: An Assessment of Youth’s Victimization in Public Transportation

Abstract: Informed by principles of environmental criminology, this study assesses patterns of sexual victimization among young riders of rail-bound public transportation using a sample of 1,122 university students in Stockholm, Sweden. Exploratory data analysis and logistic regression models underlie the methodology of the study. Findings indicate that the physical and social characteristics of transit environments have an impact on the likelihood of sexual victimization after controlling for individual factors. The th… Show more

“…Sexual harassment is prevalent too – albeit underreported (Ding et al 2020 ). Women are more concerned with security and sexual harassment and consequently tend to avoid taking buses alone after dark (Ceccato et al 2021 ; Chowdhury and van Wee; 2020 ; Currie et al 2013 ; Loukaitou-Sideris et al 2020 ; Simons et al 2014 ) or quit using public transport altogether (Quinones 2020 ).…”

“…The keywords "women/woman" signal a growing literature on sexual transit crime, a safety problem that is largely underreported (e.g. Ding et al 2020;Solymosi and Newton 2018;Newton et al 2020;Priya Uteng et al 2019;Chowdhury and van Wee 2020;Jun et al 2020;Whitzman et al 2020;Dunckel-Graglia 2013Natarajan 2016;Moreira and Ceccato 2020). These keywords in the titles are also represented when the network visualization map is created for the selected English publications (N=188), centered on the words "crime" (Fig.…”

“…Women feel less safe than men while transiting (e.g. : Cozens et al 2003b;; some researchers argue that women feel three times less safe than men (Wilow 2015) and express greater precautionary behavior than men (Ingalls et al 1994;Newton et al 2020;Ceccato and Nalla 2020). Women are far from being a uniform group of passengers.…”

“…Although women of all ages can fall victim to sexual harassment in public transport, the risk is much higher for younger people such as university students (Ceccato et al, 2021;Gautam et al, 2019). University students represent a population group that is highly active and also due to their minimal income and lack of private car ownership, many are reliant on public transport as compared to other urban inhabitants (Ceccato et al, 2021). The prevalence of sexual harassment of female university students on public transport has been reported in several studies carried out in Asia (Gautam et al, 2019;Mishra & Lamichhane, 2018;Tripathi et al, 2017).…”
