SfM photogrammetry for GeoArchaeology

Abstract: Geoarchaeological studies have benefits from new technological developments in remote sensing technologies that have become an integral and important part of the archaeological researches. In particular, Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry is one of the most successful emerging techniques in high-resolution topography (HRT) and provides exceptionally fast, low-cost and easy 3D survey for geoscience applications. In this chapter we present an example of SfM application for geoarchaeology. The purpose is … Show more

“…In archaeology, drones are becoming increasingly useful in studying previously unrecognizable features. For example, Cucchiaro, Fallu [51] demonstrate that orthomosaics from drones provide an accurate and high level of detail of the terrace landscape, the archaeological features and sediment stratigraphy along an excavation trench previously unobserved. Similarly, Brown, Walsh [52] show the beneficial use of drones to map multi-faceted terraces under intensification and diversification.…”

“…This has made structure from motion 3D data capture more accessible than ever and has encouraged its use at a variety of scales, from the production of localized DEMs with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) photography to the digitization and modeling of artefacts and other small finds.
