Shared Rearing Environment in Migraine: Results From Twins Reared Apart and Twins Reared Together

Abstract: In agreement with previous twin data, family resistance in migraine is mainly due to genetic factors, whereas environmental influences make family members different, not similar.

“…In this work we replicate previous findings of a major genetic effect for migraine [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. The main genetic and environmental architecture of migraine appears to be remarkably stable across Swedish birth cohorts (Table 5).…”

“…Analyses of varying definitions of disease revealed interesting features of the phenotype. First, starting from the most liberal definition of migraine (as measured by diagnosis or self-report), heritability was stable (52%) when cases of self-ascertained migraine without other recurrent headache was considered to Table 4 Variance components (%) for migraine by various definitions of illness and sex with 95% confidence intervals between parentheses IHS, International Headache Society criteria; CATI, Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews; Q, Questionnaire; D*, Non-additive genetic effect is significant as evaluated by means of the chi-square difference test (p<0.05); Age*, age difference in women is significant as evaluated by means of the chi-square difference test (p<0.05) †Additive and non-additive genetic variance (ADE-model) ‡The female-to-male ratio as evaluated by the logistic regression model and computation of odds-ratio 1 Present study; 2 Larsson et al [8]; 3 Svensson et al [12]; 4 Svensson et al [13] be non-affected and decreased the prevalence from 23 to 16%. “…SATSA collected information on a total of 351 pairs of twins reared apart (Pedersen et al, 1991). The median age of separation was 2 years, and 75% were separated when they were 5 years old or younger (Svensson et al, 2003). As defined by SATSA, being reared apart referred to separation before 11 years old, but it was also recognized that twins reared apart before the ages of 1, 2, and 5 exhibited a highly skewed distribution, accounting for 52%, 69%, and 82% of all twins reared apart (Kendler et al, 2000).…”

“…A large study involving about 30,000 pairs of twins showed that genetics and environmental factors contribute almost equally to the development of migraine [10]. Studies of twins who grew up together or separately showed that general environmental factors play a secondary role [11,12].…”
