Sharing economy research in hospitality and tourism: a critical review using bibliometric analysis, content analysis and a quantitative systematic literature review

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to conduct a critical review of the research on the sharing economy to identify its key intellectual foundations and their evolution and offers thematic and methodological recommendations for future research to advance the domain. Design/methodology/approach A tri-method approach using bibliometric (co-citation) analysis, thematic content analysis and a quantitative systematic literature review was conducted on sharing economy research in hospitality and tourism journals, up to and in… Show more

“…Several disciplines, including tourism, hospitality, services and management, among others, have used the bibliometric analysis. Recent examples included Cunill et al (2019), Nusair (2020) or Mody et al (2021). Specifically, there are several studies in the areas of tourism and hospitality, even in sustainability within these areas, but they are limited to a specific journal or four-five top journals (see Table 1).…”

“…In this section, we implement a step-by-step process of tri-method study (Figure 1) as outlined by (Cheng et al , 2018; Mody et al , 2021). We collated the number of articles published each year from 2015 to March 2021, as described next.…”

“…All the journals indexed in the database were considered without applying any filtration criteria for the article collection process as Web of Science maintains a collection of peer-reviewed journals of the highest quality standards 1 . We have followed the filtration procedure laid down by Goyal and Kumar (2021) and Mody et al (2021), as summarized in Figure 2, to finalize the set of 43 articles. A manual search was conducted using the following keywords in April 2021: online food delivery (Yeo et al , 2017), on-demand food delivery (Seghezzi et al , 2021), food delivery apps (Ray et al , 2019), online delivery providers (Rivera, 2019), food delivery platforms (Karamshetty et al , 2020) and on-demand meal delivery platforms (Yildiz and Savelsbergh, 2019).…”

“…Furthermore, in contrast to conferences and book chapters, journal articles typically go through a considerably more stringent review process, which enhances the credibility of published material in journals (Saha et al, 2020). Finally, because of the writers' proficiency in the language, only papers published in English were considered for this research and in addition to that, English is the most frequently used language in scientific publications (Cisneros et al, 2018) and the majority of the bibliometric studies published in the top-tier journals followed the similar pattern of filtering process (Michael Hall, 2011;Mody et al, 2021;Moyle et al, 2021;Okumus et al, 2018;Shahbaz et al, 2021). The results include the 405 documents out of which seven documents were found irrelevant after reading the abstracts.…”
