Sheep Infection by Haemonchus Species: Effect on Haematocrit and Evaluation of the FAMACHA? Method in Arsi Negele District, Oromia, Ethiopia

Abstract: Abstract:Infection with Haemonchus species in sheep at Arsi-Negele district was determined by differential third-stage larvae and the objective was to evaluate the validation of FAMACHA© chart in the diagnosis of Haemonchus infection. The animal's anemia level was determined by using the FAMACHA© method and their corresponding PCV (packed cell volume) were determined by haematocrit centrifugation method. The color of the ocular membrane of all animals was scored 1 to 5 using the FAMACHA© card and blood samples… Show more

“…For all the FAMACHA score considered, the standard deviation of FEC is high and different from the mean FEC values accepted for FAMACHA scores 3, 4 and 5 in both breeds. Similar patterns were reported by several authors (Burke et al, 2007;Fondraz, 2012;Guash et al, 2015).…”

“…The increase of FAMACHA scores corresponds with progressive parasite infections. The highest FAMACHA scores found in the Sahelian were due to the susceptibility of the breed to GIN parasites It is a useful tool for small ruminant breeders to decide which individuals need anthelminthic treatment as previously suggested by Burke et al (2007), Guash et al (2015) and Getachew et al (2015).…”

“…Recently, strong correlation among FAMACHA© eye scoring, PCV, and faecal culture positivity has been observed. Additionally, the FAMACHA© anaemia scoring guide can be employed to treat only severely anemic sheep reducing mass treatment and chance of drug resistance [73]. In this sheep the conjunctiva of the eye is being evaluated for color (A), on a scale of A to E (with 1 = normally pink and 5 = very pale) (B).…”

“…observed no correlation between the presence of the parasite and the haematological parameters. Faecal egg count was negatively correlated with Hb concentration and PCV(Kasali et al 1988, Kelkele et al 2012 Abay et al (2015). reported a highly significant negative correlation to the tune of -0.78 and -0.34 observed between Haemonchus larvae and PCV, and PCV and eye color, respectively.…”
