Shining light on Drosophila oogenesis: live imaging of egg development

Abstract: Drosophila oogenesis is a powerful model for the study of numerous questions in cell and developmental biology. In addition to its longstanding value as a genetically tractable model of organogenesis, recently it has emerged as an excellent system in which to combine genetics and live imaging. Rapidly improving ex vivo culture conditions, new fluorescent biosensors and photo-manipulation tools, and advances in microscopy have allowed direct observation in real time of processes such as stem cell self-renewal, … Show more

“…S10). From the border region, it takes approximately 5 d for the completion of oogenesis (36). Compared with the previous 2.5 d of cyst development in regions 1 and 2A, where there is the potential for Wolbachia transmission from the GSCN and escort cells, the developmental time available for transmission of Wolbachia derived from the SSCN is about twice as long (Fig.…”

“…Our current understanding of the mechanisms involved in Wolbachia localization is limited (36). Toward dissecting the mechanistic basis of stem-cell niche tropism, we investigated the relative role of bacterial versus host factors in the different patterns of niche tropism.…”

“…The newly eclosed females were collected and fed with yeast powder at 25°C for 36 hours (He et al, 2011), and then the composition of each ovariole with different stages of developing egg chambers was analyzed. Ovarioles from OreR females were classified in the following two groups: one group contained at least one middle stage egg chamber (vitellogenic stage 8-10) and one late stage egg chamber (Fig.…”

“…The availability of various GFP-tagged proteins means that many cellular processes can be monitored in living cells over the course of minutes or hours, and using this technique, processes such as RNP transport, epithelial morphogenesis, and tissue remodeling have been described in great detail in Drosophila oocytes 1,2 .…”

“…The availability of various GFP-tagged proteins means that many cellular processes can be monitored in living cells over the course of minutes or hours, and using this technique, processes such as RNP transport, epithelial morphogenesis, and tissue remodeling have been described in great detail in Drosophila oocytes 1,2 .The ability to perform video imaging combined with a rich repertoire of mutants allows an enormous variety of genes and processes to be examined in incredible detail. One such example is the process of ooplasmic streaming, which initiates at mid-oogenesis 3,4 .…”
