Short- and Long-Term Outcome of Dogs Following Surgical Correction of a Persistent Right Aortic Arch

Abstract: This study reports the survival to discharge, postdischarge survival, and long-term outcome of dogs following surgical correction of a persistent right aortic arch (PRAA). Information for 52 dogs, 28 dogs, and 23 dogs was available for analysis of survival to discharge, postdischarge survival, and long-term outcome, respectively. Ninety-two percent of dogs survived to the time of discharge and 18% of dogs surviving to discharge were euthanized within 2 mo of surgery. Breed, age at the time of presentation, and… Show more

“…Outcomes following open surgery for correction of PRAA are varied, with resolution of regurgitation reported in 9–92% of cases treated by a thoracotomy . Short‐term outcomes (<12 months) for dogs following thoracoscopic surgery for PRAA appear promising, with reduction in regurgitation in all reported cases and complete resolution in 64% of cases in a recent series of 14 dogs .…”

“…Surgical transection of the ligamentum is Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery, Thoracoscopy necessary and the prognosis is good to excellent in most cases, although some degree of esophageal dilation may persist. 17 Dogs are young and typically malnourished at the time of diagnosis and are therefore not ideal surgical candidates. Effort should be made to encourage nutritional support as best possible before surgical intervention, although treatment should not be delayed for an extended period of time.…”
