Short and Long Term Repeatability of Saccharin Transit Time in Current, Former, and Never Smokers

Abstract: Smoking progressively damages the efficiency of mucociliary clearance (MCC) defense mechanisms, thus contributing to increased susceptibility to respiratory infections. Prolonged mucociliary clearance transit time (MCCTT) caused by chronic smoking has been investigated by saccharin test, but little data is available about its short-and long-term reproducibility. Moreover, it is not known if MCC impairment can be reversed when stopping smoking. Objective of the study is to investigate and compare short (3 days)… Show more

“…Lastly, tobacco smoking reduces the half-life of caffeine [88], a finding that might contribute to a weaker protective effect of coffee in smokers. Therefore, given that smokers are often coffee consumers, a weaker protective role is likely to take place in males, with the rate of smokers being higher in males than in females [89][90][91]. Although in our sample we found a significant difference in smoking habits among the groups, there was no significant smoking-related independent association with the outcome measures.…”

“…Normal STT depends on the method of testing, environmental and geographical factors and varies from 5 to 17 minutes. [8][9][10] STT is widely used in the evaluation of mucociliary clearance and the methodology has been recently standardized. 11 The face mask is reported to be one of the most widely used and successful methods of reducing the risk of airborne viral transmission by reducing the spread and inhalation of aerosols when used properly.…”
