Short-Current-Pulse Based Adaptive Maximum-Power-Point Tracking for Photovoltaic Power Generation System

Abstract: This paper focuses on a maximum power point tracking method of photovoltaics by means of use of the short-current pulse. It has been reported that the optimum operating current is proportional to the short current and the maximum power point tracking can be performed by detecting the short current. The pro posed method utilizes the intermittent short-current pulse to estimate the optimum operating current and its operating characteristics have experimentally been verified. Also, an adaptive mechanism to identi… Show more

“…Partial shadowing can lead to multiple MPP-s, confusing most of the common MPPT algorithms, which converge to a local MPP instead of the global one as shown on the figure below. One of the most common approaches to find the MPP in partially shaded conditions is the periodical sweeping over the v-p characteristic of the solar array, like in [10] and [16] The method proposed in [17] is based on use of a shortcircuit current pulse of the PV to determine an optimum operating current for the maximum output power. This is done for 80 µs in every 80 ms.…”

“…Usually, in the case where MPPT control of each PV module is required, power detectors must be connected to every PV module [4]. However, this inevitably increases production cost, and the increased complexity of the system may reduce the reliability of the system.…”

“…The main drawbacks of the PV generation system are high initial installation cost and low energy conversion efficiency. In an effort to overcome these problems, a great deal of research, such as maximum power point control and high conversion inverter topology, has been conducted over past ten years [1]- [4].…”

“…Though this method can get accurate MPPs, a digital signal processor (DSP) or a microprocessor is usually needed for these complex calculations. The Constant Voltage method [4], which uses 76% open circuit voltage as the MPP voltage, and the Short-Circuit Current method [5] are simple, but they do not always accurately track MPPs.…”
