Short Investigation of Grafting as a Method for Improving Abrasion Resistance of Cross-Linked Cotton

Abstract: The primary effect of grafting vinyl monomers onto cotton fabrics is a substantial increase in elongation and a moderate decrease in tensile strength, the net result in many cases being an increase in toughness. In some instances the grafted fabric exhibits a significant increase in wrinkle recovery level. The increase in fabric toughness is reflected in improved abrasion resistance of the grafted fabric and also of the wrinkle resistant fabric derived therefrom by typical cross-linking treatments. The best suc… Show more

“…직물이나 편물의 내 구성에서 마모특성은 소비자가 의류제품을 착의했을 때, 외관 뿐만 아니라 제품의 질적인 면과 효용성 등에 영향을 끼치는 직물소재의 매우 중요한 특징 중의 하나이다 (Hollen et al, 1979 (김승진 외, 1994a; 김승진 외, 1994b). 또한, 마모저항을 개선하기 위한 여러 가지 방법이 제시 되었는데, 일반적으로 유연제 등과 같은 후가공제 처리에 의한 방법이 많이 사용된다고 보고하고 있다 (Chipalkatti et al, 1967;Feldtman and Leeder, 1984;Inoue et al, 1997;Prahl et al, 1966;Rowland and Mason, 1977;Rowland et al, 1978;Shin and Rowland, 1981). “…From Table I, it is obvious that the tensile strength and the percent elongation increase in case of the THFA-grafted fabrics as compared with the control (ungrafted) cotton and silk fabrics. This may be attributed to the finding 14 that grafting reduces the extent of hydrogen bonding between cellulose chains, and this leads to decrement in the rigidity of the native structure. The reduced rigidity, as well as the presence of elastomeric material on the surface of the fabric, could be responsible for the increase in the tensile strength and percent elongation.…”

“…However, in contrast with the cross-linking reaction, there seems to be little consensus as to how the polymer deposit affects the fabric properties through its influence on the cross-linking reaction. Prahl [6] showed correlations between physical parameters of the polymer deposit and final fabri,c characteristics. In wet polymer-deposition studies [3,4,5] (so-called wet fixation processes), the swelling of the fiber and thereby, its penetration by the monomer and the final polymer distribution are emphasized.…”
