An expression is derived for the strength of the blended yarn spun at optimum twist, in terms of the strengths of yarns spun from the two components at optimum twist. Good agreement between the predicted and observed values is found over a range of cottons and counts. The strength deficiency of the blended yarn is partly due to the differential response of the two components to twist. The evenness of the yarn is better than would have been expected, in contrast to the results for the yarn strength.
The primary effect of grafting vinyl monomers onto cotton fabrics is a substantial increase in elongation and a moderate decrease in tensile strength, the net result in many cases being an increase in toughness. In some instances the grafted fabric exhibits a significant increase in wrinkle recovery level.The increase in fabric toughness is reflected in improved abrasion resistance of the grafted fabric and also of the wrinkle resistant fabric derived therefrom by typical cross-linking treatments. The best such grafts, notably those based on diethylaminoethyl acrylate or ethyl acrylate, are able to overcome most of the loss in abrasion resistance incurred by conventional cross-linking treatment.
An automated colorimetric microprocedure, suitable for screening purposes, has been developed for the determination of blood uric acid levels. The method uses 2O-µl. whole-blood (capillary) samples and is based on the AutoAnalyzer measurement of the absorbance of the colored uric acid-phosphotungstic acid complex. The dilution inherent in the sampling procedure necessitated a modification of the existing AutoAnalyzer method to increase the sensitivity. The proposed method is evaluated for precision and accuracy by comparison with the standard AutoAnalyzer macro-method.
