Shoulder Isokinetic Performance in Healthy Professional Judo Athletes: Normative Data

Abstract: Objective:To evaluate normative data of shoulder isokinetic strength in healthy professional judo athletes.Methods:Cross-sectional study with 20 professional male and female athletes (10 female), evaluated with an isokinetic dynamometer. The strength assessment was carried out in external and internal rotation, flexion, extension, adduction and abduction. All data collected on muscle torque were normalized with body mass index. Results:Athletes demonstrated higher peak torque and joint work in shoulder adductio… Show more

“…It was reported that isokinetic dynamometry could provide beneficial information regarding the detection of the strength of a particular muscle group as well as the timely detection of imbalance between muscle groups in judo [ 11 ] and as an injury prevention tool [ 12 ]. Isokinetic testing has been used in judo mainly to test knee [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ], shoulder [ 19 ], elbow [ 20 ], trunk [ 21 ], hip [ 17 ] and ankle [ 14 ] muscle strength and strength ratios. However, the problem of these studies is that the sampling included judo athletes from multiple weight categories.…”

“…Among elite judokas, male athletes have more glenohumeral rotator muscle strength than females, and the dominant shoulder is stronger than the nondominant shoulder in both sexes, but bilateral strength asymmetry is less than 10%. (Marcondes et al, 2019) A recent study reported normative values for the glenohumeral range of motion and demonstrated that young female judo athletes have more shoulder joint laxity than males. (Madaleno et al, 2021) Additional characterization of the shoulders of judo athletes and improved identification of factors affecting shoulder functional status would help developing specific programmes with the purpose of prevent shoulder injury occurrence and recurrence in judo athletes.…”
