Shrinkage of Cotton Fibers in Sodium Hydroxide Solutions and Resulting Elastic Properties

Abstract: Since the shrinkage of the constituent fibers represents a fundamental change during the slack mercerization of cotton yarns and fabrics, the literature on shrinkage of fibers as such in sodium hydroxide solutions has been reviewed; also that on the elastic properties of air-dry mercerized fibers in comparison with those of the original untreated fibers. It has been reported that raw cotton fibers shrink less than purified fibers. Elongation at break is increased by mercerization of fibers while they are free … Show more

“…The observed reduction in length is attributed, in part, to the same shrinkage phenomenon that accompanies the cross-sectional swelling of fibers in slack mercerization of cotton, and which has also been observed in these glycine treatments. 22 Goldthwaite 32 reported shrinkages of between 15% and 19% for fibers treated in slack-form in strong sodium hydroxide. The values recorded in this investigation show glycine treated fiber shrinks less than 5% during treatment.…”

“…Slack mercerization is a practical method for achieving such properties as elasticity of cotton fibers. 5 and polynosic fiber were dyed with three reactive dyes. Polynosic fiber showed markedly different dye uptake depending on dye species.…”

“…1) consisting of two identical rings with an inner diameter of 100 mm and an outer diameter of 150 mm, which was laser-cut from 3 mm thick PMMA sheets and xed with eight M8 stainless steel bolts to apply even pressure across the outside of the nanopapers preventing shrinkage that commonly occurs during mercerisation. (Goldthwait 1965) This frame system, holding a nanopaper, was subsequently immersed into NaOH solutions of various concentrations for de ned time intervals (Table 1).…”
