Shunt active power filter with enhanced dynamic performance using novel control strategy

Abstract: To realise the accurate and real-time compensation of the harmonics of a power system, this study proposes a novel control strategy for shunt active power filter (SAPF), adopting the composite strategy of neural network proportional-integral (PI) control and dual-repetitive controller (DRC). In DRC, one repetitive controller is used to ensure current tracking accuracy and the other one is used to enhance dynamic response. The neural network PI control is adopted to improve response speed by turning the PI para… Show more

“…The detailed calculations for determining the values of the dc link capacitor, dc/dc boost inductor and filtering inductor was based on [53,54]. Specifically, for the dc link capacitor, a bigger value is needed for minimizing the ripple voltage [52,55]. Two types of nonlinear loads were developed by using a diode H-bridge rectifier with 470 µF capacitor and 50 Ω resistor (capacitive load) connected in parallel as the first one, and meanwhile a 160 mH inductor and 15 Ω resistor (inductive load) connected in series for the second one.…”

“…A synchronizer based on the ANN method, or called as unified ADALINEs-based fundamental voltage extraction algorithm, is used to produce a reference sinusoidal signal [46]. The source of harmonics is from a rectifier-based circuit with nonlinear loads, connected to the grid, which produces current harmonics in electrical power systems [47][48][49][50][51][52].…”

“…Many filters are designed to infuse the harmonics and reactive current to the supply mains. The Active filter compensates the harmonics and static VAr compensates the reactive power [1][2][3][4][5][6], but both compensation is still under research. The lessening of both issues depends upon the reference current generated by the control algorithm and current controller of the Shunt Active filter (SAF).…”

“…Both involved many transformations and mathematical calculation. Many types of reference current generator of APF are proposed in the literature [1][2][3][4][5]. The harmonic current can be extracted from the load current using frequency domain and time domain.…”

“…In order to obtain a symmetrical switching frequency, repetitive, predictive, sliding mode and Crisp-PI current controllers are employed. All these controllers are developed using mathematical models [23,24]. Nevertheless, Crisp-PI current controllers exhibit simpler mathematical model than the above-mentioned controllers [25].…”
