The issue of the persistence of paganism is now quite well considered; however, it is only in recent times that the same concern approached from another perspective, the multifaceted nature of the Christianisation of the Peloponnese, has become the topic of detailed discussion. It is likely that Christianisation in Achaea took place incrementally and with a variety of effects according to the location. The processes of how this took place and under what circumstances remain to be discussed in detail. As a considered and active process, understanding methods of conversion should provide insights into the nature of society at the time, particularly in terms of communications. Church location reflects a range of choices made in terms of the conversion process and therefore is fundamental to analysing religious transformation. Such insights are important, particularly given the dearth of historical sources for, and difficulties of refining, church chronologies in the Peloponnese. In the case of the Late Antique Peloponnese, a great deal is known about many individual churches as a result of quite extensive excavation of a majority of them, particularly through the work of Pallas and Orlandos. This evidence, together with the results of a survey of all the known Late Antique churches in the Peloponnese undertaken in 2012, makes possible a synthetic interpretation of all the material within the surrounding landscape. While the precise chronologies may remain elusive, this present study shows how sociological theories of conversion processes can be applied to the topographic analysis of the Late Antique churches of the Peloponnese to help determine the nature of Christianisation across the diachronic range. In this work I will present some new theories regarding processes and phases of conversion, and the implications of these in terms of understanding networks and society in the Late Antique Peloponnese.

Olympos 3 No’lu Kilise’nin kuzeyinde yer alan yarım daire planlı eksedra gerek içerisindeki kenotaph uygulamaları gerekse dekorasyonu ile kilisenin azizlerin ve piskoposların hatırasıyla hizmet eden bir ziyaretgah olmasını sağlamış olmalıdır. Kazılar sırasında bulunan duvar resmi kalıntıları içerisinde özellikle Niş 1’de bulunan duvar resmi parçaları önemli veriler sunmaktadır. Parçalardan bir kısmı alt bölümde bulunan haleli figüre ait olup yazıt parçalarından bu kişinin Olympos’un Methodius’un şehit edilmesinden 120 yıl sonra kayıtlarda ismi geçen ilk piskoposu olan Aristokritos olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Burada bulunan esas önemli figür ise İsa’dır; parçalanıp dökülmüş halde bulunan İsa tasvirinin nişin en üst kesiminde, kemerin altında yer aldığı düşünülmektedir. İsa, yarım daire bir çerçeve içerisinde büst formunda tasvir edilmiş olup uzun saçlı ve sakallı, bir elinde İncil tutar haliyle “Pantokrator İsa” tipindedir. Bu tasvir, duvar resminde bulunan Elçilerin İşleri’nden alıntılanmış yazıtla birlikte değerlendirildiğinde, yalnızca tipolojik olarak değil ikonografik olarak da Pantokrator olarak tanımlanmalıdır. Gerek tasvir özellikleri gerekse diğer buluntuların desteğiyle MS altıncı yüzyıl ortalarına tarihlendirdiğimiz bu tasvir, tipin en erken örneklerinden birisidir ve bu sebepten Bizans resim sanatı için son derece önemlidir. Ayrıca, Olympos 3 No’lu Kilise eksedrasının figürlü duvar resimleri, Anadolu’da İkonoklast Dönem öncesine ait günümüze ulaşmış az sayıda örnek içerisinde Pantokrator İsa’nın bulunduğu şu ana kadar tespit edilmiş ilk eserdir.

Building Democracy in Late Archaic Athens

In 508/7 B.C.E., after years of stasis and uncertainty, the city of Athens was rocked by a momentous occurrence: the passage of a series of reforms that resulted in the creation of what has come to be known as the world’s first democracy. Exactly how the Athenians did this is still a fundamental question 2,500 years later. This book provides a novel answer to these questions by considering the built environment broadly and monumental architecture specifically. The reforms transformed the very nature of what it meant to be Athenian and their far-reaching effects would come to leave their mark on nearly every aspect of society, including the structures at which they prayed and in which they debated legislation. This book investigates the built environment of ancient Athens precisely during this time, the Late Archaic period (ca. 514/13–480/79 B.C.E.). It was in these decades, filled with transition and disorder, that the Athenians transformed their political system from a tyranny to a democracy. Amidst concurrent sociopolitical changes, they altered the physical landscape and undertook the monumental articulation of the city and countryside. Interpreting the nature of the fledgling democracy from a material standpoint, this book approaches the questions and problems of the early political system through the lens of buildings. It draws attention to a pivotal period in Athenian political history through the built environment, thereby exposing the richness of the material record and illustrating how it participated in the creation of a new demotic Athenian identity.
