SIGLa: an adaptable LIMS for multiple laboratories

Abstract: BackgroundThe need to manage large amounts of data is a clear demand for laboratories nowadays. The use of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) to achieve this is growing each day. A LIMS is a complex computational system used to manage laboratory data with emphasis in quality assurance. Several LIMS are available currently. However, most of them have proprietary code and are commercialized with a high cost. Moreover, due to its complexity, LIMS are usually designed to comply with the needs of one … Show more

“…Djeen is based solely on open-source technology, being its database (MySQL or PostgreSQL) or the Content Management System (Joomla!). SIGLa (Systema Integrado de Gerência de Laboratoriós, [12]) is based on a workflow management tool that makes it also adaptable to multiple usages. The concept of workflows is not needed by all users and increases dramatically the complexity of data entry.…”

“…Dependent on the contained range of functions, workflow management systems can include master data management, process documentation, measurement‐data acquisition and processing, sample tracking, process template management as well as report and documentation management . When workflow management systems do not support these functions, additional IT systems, such as laboratory information management systems (LIMS) , electronic laboratory notebooks (ELN) , or scientific data management systems (SDMS) , have to be integrated to realize these tasks.…”

“…When LESs themselves do not provide appropriate process documentation, master data management, measurement data acquisition and processing, sample tracking, process template management, and report and documentation management, [4][5][6][7][8] they require additional IT system integrations, for example, laboratory information management systems (LIMSs), 9 electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs), 10,11 or scientific data management systems (SDMSs). 12…”
