Significance of p53 and bcl-2 Immunoexpression in the Prognosis of Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: This study was undertaken to determine whether p53 or bcl-2 immunoexpression has any significance in the prognosis of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Eighty-four cases of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma at different pathological stages and locations were studied. All patients were treated surgically first, and followed up for 6 -96 months (mean, 35 months). p53 and bcl-2 immunoexpression in tumour cells, evaluated by image analysis and histoscore, were found in 71.4% and 46.4% of tumours, respectively. Gl… Show more

“…No correlations were observed between Bcl-2 expression and the patients’ clinical and histopathological features. Yildirim et al (17) analyzed Bcl-2 immunoexpression on 84 subjects treated for laryngeal SCC at different pathological stages and locations. Transglottic tumors expressed significantly high levels of Bcl-2, but no connection was found with postoperative survival.…”

“…Abnormalities in this gene are the most frequent genetic alterations that have been identified in LSCC; abnormal protein accumulations correlate with the presence of the mutated p53 gene [70]. The overexpression of p53 in malignant laryngeal lesions has been reported in many studies [28,41,45,70].…”

“…The prognostic value of p53 in patients with HNSCC is inconclusive [62]. Some studies suggest that the immunoexpression of p53 is not a significant prognostic predictor for LSCC [28,31,70].…”
