Significance of Plasma C-peptide in Obese African American Adolescents

Abstract: Background C-peptide blood levels can indicate whether or not a person is producing insulin and roughly how much. C-peptide is secreted as a byproduct of the biosynthesis of insulin from proinsulin. C-peptide has proposed biological activity and a well-established diagnostic value. The significance of C-peptide concentration in the plasma and urine in the pediatric population needs further delineation. Aim To determine the significance of plasma C-peptide in obese African American adolescents with mild insul… Show more

“…C-peptide is a byproduct of the insulin synthesis from pro-insulin and roughly indicates the extent of insulin production and release. C-peptide is a biological active compound (Forst et al, 1998) and also serves as an important diagnostic biomarker (Cardellini et al, 2017, Becht et al, 2016, Cabrera de León et al, 2015, Williams et al, 2011). Recently, C-peptide has been suggested as a strong indicator of metabolic syndrome suggesting the importance of this biomolecule in diagnosis of metabolic syndrome (Gonzalez-Mejia et al, 2016).…”

“…This was also observed among individuals who only show insulin resistance and have not yet developed T2D [47]. Levels of c-peptide are known to be indicators for MetS and Coronary artery disease (CAD) [48][49][50][51][52] and they positively correlate with HOMA-IR [53,54]. Increased level of IL13 has been observed in subjects with insulin resistance [55].…”
