Significance of prediabetes as a nosological entity

Abstract: Prediabetes is a glucose metabolism disorder considered as a distinct nosological entity which strongly predicts the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. This nosological entity itself is a serious condition indicating an increased risk of atherosclerotic and oncological complications. In patients with prediabetes, other components of metabolic syndrome are usually present, such as arterial hypertension, obesity or dyslipidaemia, further increasing an individual's risk of morbidity and mortality. Prediabet… Show more

“…PreDM, a prominent risk factor of T2DM, is characterized as an asymptomatic condition, as individuals rarely present with physical symptoms, such as polydipsia, polyphagia, and fatigue, as seen in T2DM [ 5 , 24 ]. However, the literature documents that there are some microvascular and macrovascular changes that begin in the prediabetic state that may contribute to the long-term complications of T2DM if prediabetes progresses to T2DM [ 9 , 24 , 25 ]. A large proportion of the global population is predisposed to prediabetes.…”

“…Complete epidemiological data concerning prediabetes are not available as there are no uniform diagnostic criteria that would be used by all scientific societies ( Table 1 ), and there are no representative data from most of the world’s countries [ 2 , 4 , 5 ].…”

“…Prediabetes is an intermediate metabolic condition between normal and diabetes mellitus with blood glucose level more than the normal and lower than that of diabetes mellitus (Bansal, 2015). Most people are not aware of prediabetes, because they are asymptomatic (Stepanek, 2018). Type 2 diabetes mellitus and prediabetes are emergence risk factors for development of cardiovascular disorders, as these are associated with accelerated atherosclerosis (Arnold, 2020;Fan, 2017).…”
