Silica-based hierarchical porous Janus microcapsules: construction and support of Au nano-particle catalyst inside

Abstract: A facile and novel method was developed to fabricate silica-based hierarchical porous Janus microcapsules (HPJMs SiO) for catalysis. The resulting Au@HPJMs SiO nanocomposites showed enhanced catalysis, great stability, convenient recovery and reuse without losing catalytic efficiency.

“…The open‐mouthed structures could be beneficial for mass diffusion and full exposure of the inner surfaces, could greatly improve the performance of microcapsules. Nevertheless, only a few examples have been reported in which open‐mouthed microcapsules are constructed through a hard‐template method to date . Moreover, the main drawbacks of this method are the multiple time‐consuming steps and harsh conditions for the template‐removing.…”

“…Silica hollow structures are rigidly arranged, therefore its shape is often preserved during the preparation and application steps . Besides, high surface area and large pore volume afford high loading capacity, while the mechanical stability protects the encapsulated species from environmental influences …”

“…The dimensions of the container in templated hollow structures are dependent on the size of the sacrificial core, and must be compatible with the species that will be encapsulated. Therefore, micro‐sized templates produce hollow silica spheres with inner space that is large enough to host species bigger than a few nanometers, such as enzymes or metal nanoparticles . Additionally, there is free space for admittance and mobility of substrates.…”
