Silicon-based FMCW signal generators: A review

Abstract: FMCW radars with high resolution necessities the generation of highly linear, low phase noise, and low spur chirp signals with large bandwidth and a short modulation period. This paper reviews recent research progress on silicon-based FMCW signal generators, identifies advances in architecture, fundamental design, performance analysis, and applications of the FMCW synthesizer.

This paper presents an E-band frequency quadrupler in 40-nm CMOS technology. The circuit employs two push–push frequency doublers and two single-stage neutralized amplifiers. The pseudo-differential class-B biased cascode topology is adopted for the frequency doubler, which improves the reverse isolation and the conversion gain. Neutralization technique is applied to increase the stability and the power gain of the amplifiers simultaneously. The stacked transformers are used for single-ended-to-differential transformation as well as output bandpass filtering. The output bandpass filter enhances the 4th-harmonic output power, while rejecting the undesired harmonics, especially the 2nd harmonic. The core chip is 0.23 mm2 in size and consumes 34 mW. The measured 4th harmonic achieves a maximum output power of 1.7 dBm with a peak conversion gain of 3.4 dB at 76 GHz. The fundamental and 2nd-harmonic suppressions of over 45 and 20 dB are achieved for the spectrum from 74 to 82 GHz, respectively.

Towards the commercialization of chipless radio frequency identification (RFID) systems, there are still some pressing issues. The detection and identification of chipless RFID tags are mainly realized by a vector network analyzer (VNA). In practice, this equipment is costly and not convenient enough. This paper designs a maneuverable detection model based on frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW), the detection target is an 8-bit chipless tag based on a variable-side-length spiral resonance unit and decodes the amplitude and phase information. On this basis, signal processing is performed on the generated amplitude and phase based on the Savitzky-Golay (SG) smoothing algorithm, and then the simulation data of HFSS is compared with ADS model data by the matrix pencil method (MPM). The results show that the proposed FMCW-based method can be effectively implemented in wireless communication, providing a new solution for flexible and inexpensive chipless tag detection and recognition.

This paper mainly studies the control of LED lamps under the condition of centralized DC power supply by power carrier mode, and modifies the mature power carrier scheme in AC system to adapt to the DC system environment and realize reliable communication in DC system. Through the analysis of system functional requirements and the comparison of existing communication technologies, the overall architecture of DC tunnel lighting system is proposed. The system adopts two-tier structure, including monitoring center, communication controller and HVDC tunnel lighting control terminal. This system realizes the master-slave monitoring of the communication controller to the control terminal of HVDC tunnel lamps, and puts forward the modification scheme to the conventional power carrier scheme, and verifies the improved power carrier scheme of DC system through the Qijiashan tunnel lighting project.
