Silk Fibroin Nanocomposites with Indium Tin Oxide toward Sustainable Capacitive Touch Sensing Applications

Abstract: The development of multifunctional sustainable polymer composites is an increasing need in the scope of the Internet of Things (IOT) and the circular economy paradigm. In this context, nanocomposites based on silk fibroin (SF) and indium tin oxide (ITO) (up to 40 wt %) were produced by solvent casting to improve the mechanical and dielectric properties of the protein, and develop capacitive touch sensing devices. Samples with good filler dispersion, compact morphology, and optical transparency were obtained in… Show more

“…Dong et al [15] developed a composite conductive film based on RSF/CNTs and assembled it with a highly elastic dielectric layer to prepare a capacitive pressure sensor, the addition of CNTs can improve the conductivity and mechanical strength of the film, which is used in human physiology and motion detection. Rezabal et al [156] developed a capacitive touch sensing device by preparing an RSF/indium tin oxide (ITO) composite film, and the addition of ITO can improve the mechanical and dielectric properties of RSF, with a maximum dielectric constant of 10. Based on this, the authors have developed a 4 × 4 array touch sensor with high sensitivity to sense touch or swiping (figure 7(c)).…”

“…Capacitive sensors offer another option to measure the pose of soft robots as well as their interaction with the environment by measuring the change in capacitance. To develop flexible capacitive sensors, several stretchable and conductive materials are used to fabricate electrodes, such as composites, 112 conductive polymer, 113 and thin films. 114 Another indicator of the performance of capacitive sensors is sensitivity, which is dominated by deformation of the dielectric layers.…”

“…[127][128][129][130] One such material is indium tin oxide (ITO), widely used in semiconductor devices such as flat-panel displays and touch screens due to its unique properties. [131][132][133][134] ITO is a transparent conducting electrode with a high refractive index and can conduct electricity, attributed to the addition of tin to indium oxide, which introduces free electrons into the material and makes ITO conductive. Simultaneously, the oxygen ions in the material provide the ITO with a high refractive index, allowing it to function as a transparent material.…”
