Silk Fibroin Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery: Effect of Bovine Serum Albumin and Magnetic Nanoparticles Addition on Drug Encapsulation and Release

Abstract: Silk fibroin nanoparticles were prepared in the present study based on phase separation between silk fibroin and polyvinyl alcohol. The drug encapsulation efficiency of the prepared nanoparticles was examined at a range of concentrations from 10 ppm to 500 ppm for pramipexole, curcumin, and propranolol hydrochloride. Silk fibroin nanoparticles encapsulated with propranolol presented the highest drug release profile. In order to improve the drug encapsulation efficiency and drug release performance, a modificat… Show more

“…These interactions may be responsible for promoting the association of porphyrins with the fibroin fibers, as it is known that fibroin can form π–π stacking interactions with aromatic rings by means of tyrosine residues . It has been previously reporter in the literature that curcumin attached to fibroin nanoparticle via π–π stacking and this reduced curcumin release and in our case this mechanism could be possible being the responsible for the silk fibers/porphyrin interactions …”

“…Finding a suitable carrier that delivers the drugs and targets the tumor blood vessels' leaky vasculature passively is a practical way to make the chemotherapeutics effectively. 7 Serum albumin is a typical model protein, and because it can bind with various ligands, it is also called a multifunctional carrier protein of plasma. [8][9][10] Due to these characteristics, bovine serum albumin (BSA) is usually made into nanoparticles (NPs), which are biodegraded and tractable to be prepared in specific sizes.…”

“…XRD was employed to further characterize the magnetic silk fibroin nanoparticles. As shown in Figure b a broad peak around 2θ=20° was seen which could be attributed to the silk II crystal structure of fibroin . In addition, diffraction peaks corresponding to the (220), (311), (400), (440), (422), (511) and (440) planes are related to the crystal structure of Fe3O4 which confirm the formation of magnetic silk fibroin nanoparticles …”
