Silk fibroin/polycaprolactone nanofibrous membranes loaded with natural Manuka honey for potential wound healing

Abstract: Antibacterial wound dressing, an effective barrier between the wound and the foreign environment, has the ability to inhibit and even kill the bacteria around the wound so that it can accelerate the wound healing. However, the loaded antibacterial agents of antibiotics and metal ions on wound dressings caused the new problems of drug resistance and toxicity. To develop a novel wound dressing with the natural antibacterial property agent, here, natural Manuka honey (MH), silk fibroin (SF), and polycaprolactone … Show more

“…The antibacterial activity of electrospun scaffolds against E. coli , S. aureus , and C. albicans was studied by our previous method 30 . In brief, foremost, the concentration of E. coli , S. aureus , and C. albicans solution was diluted repeatedly to reach 10 8 –10 9 CFU/ml, and reached 1.5 × 10 5 –3.5 × 10 5 CFU/ml by four‐step dilution method.…”

Then, 0.1 g sample, 14 ml PBS and 0.1 ml standard bacterial solution was added to 50 ml centrifuge tube and cultured at 37 C for 18 h with oscillator.…”

“…Electrospun fibrous membranes generally have high porosity, which facilitates air permeability for application in wound healing. 19 Air permeability can be reflected by the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). PLGA, PLGA/SF, PLGA/AA, and PLGA/SF/AA fibrous membrane have WVTR of 23,684 ± 1128, 25,563 ± 1302, 24,060 ± 1302, 24,812 ± 0 g m À2 day À1 , showing no significant difference between control and indicating their good air permeability (Table 3).…”

“…However, antibiotics generally for therapy in clinic inevitably induce drug resistance, while the widely used metal ions cause the environmental problem and toxicity. 19 Therefore, natural antibacterial agents attract increasing attention in recent years. Animal antimicrobial peptides are loaded on electrospun nanofibrous membranes for fabricating antibacterial wound dressing through direct mixed spinning method or post-processing crosslinking method.…”
