Silver Nanowires and Silanes in Hybrid Functionalization of Aramid Fabrics

Abstract: New functionalization methods of meta- and para-aramid fabrics with silver nanowires (AgNWs) and two silanes (3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)) and diethoxydimethylsilane (DEDMS) were developed: a one-step method (mixture) with AgNWs dispersed in the silane mixture and a two-step method (layer-by-layer) in which the silanes mixture was applied to the previously deposited AgNWs layer. The fabrics were pre-treated in a low-pressure air radio frequency (RF) plasma and subsequently coated with polydopamine. Th… Show more

“…The modes near 1485 and 1455 cm –1 can be attributed to aliphatic C–H in-plane bending vibrations of CH 2 75 and C=C stretching vibrations of an aromatic ring, respectively. 74 All of this confirms the successful formation of the PDA layer on the silicon wafer surface.…”

“… 72 The mode near 1580 cm –1 as well as the oscillation near 1345 cm –1 are attributed to C–O catechol stretching vibrations and C–N stretching of PDA. 73 , 74 The absorption maximum in the spectra near 1536 cm –1 is associated with stretching vibrations of the C=N bond of the aromatic ring. The modes near 1485 and 1455 cm –1 can be attributed to aliphatic C–H in-plane bending vibrations of CH 2 75 and C=C stretching vibrations of an aromatic ring, respectively.…”

“…It should be reminded that no chemicals other than PEI were exploited, and even heat treatments were not applied after PEI coating. Likewise, LbL coatings were carried out without drying between each self-assembly deposition, contrary to previous studies [4,27,29]. Although the surface coverage performance appeared to be not ideal, we nevertheless believe that LbL has strong potential for the deposition of nanocoatings with the right material combination, and provides a unique opportunity to tailor the surface of fibers, even inert ones like aramid.…”

“…Notably, the pioneering works by Uğur and co-workers on the application of LbL for textile surfaces, particularly utilizing nanoparticles, have revealed unexplored potential [20][21][22][23]. Although LbL offers a valuable opportunity to tailor the surface properties of textile fibers, its utilization in modifying aramid fibers remains surprisingly scarce [24][25][26][27][28], with only two studies focusing on UV protection [4,29].…”

“…Silver nanowires (AgNWs) and two silanes: 3-aminopropyl(triethoxy)silane (APTES) and (diethoxy)dimethylsilane (DEDMS) were used for the functionalization of meta- and para-aramid fabrics, which were first pre-treated in a low-pressure air radio frequency (RF) plasma, followed by coating with polydopamine. The modified fabrics showed good hydrophobic properties (contact angle of 112–125°) [ 119 ].…”
