Simple Ways to Estimate Meningioma Volume: Can ABC- and SH-Derived Methods Be Used in Clinical Practice Reliably?

Abstract: Background. There is a clinical demand for rapid estimation of meningioma volumes. Our objective was to assess the accuracy of three ABC-derived and three SH-derived formula methods on volume estimation of meningiomas. Methods. The study group comprised 678 patients treated at our department for histopathologically proven intracranial meningiomas. For each patient, tumor volumes were independently measured using six formula methods as well as planimetry. Maximum tumor diameter and ellipsoidity were also record… Show more

“…After 6 months of IM 400 mg/day, tumor volume was reduced by 81.68% (93.8×70.2×111.7 mm³) compared to previous CT results, calculated using the clinical volume formula v = 1/2abc (7). Meanwhile, tumor heterogeneity was markedly altered (Figure 2).…”

“…The following parameters were reviewed: sex, age, Karnofsky Performance Scale, exact tumor topography, and preoperative volume (calculated with the A * B * C/2 formula) 16 based on operative report and MRI. The extent of resection was determined according to the Simpson grading scale.…”

“…Although this method is suitable for subdural hematoma, the shape of subdural hematoma is not all symmetrical crescent, especially since many chronic subdural hematomas are comma-like [ 11 ]. The accuracy of the calculation results is controversial [ 12 , 13 ].…”
