Simplified Kinematic Analysis of Bevel Epicyclic Gear Trains With Application to Power-Flow and Efficiency Analyses

Abstract: A kinematic analysis technique is introduced to find the angular velocities of all links in bevel epicyclic gear trains. The method relies on previous work in graph theory. It improves on existing techniques used for analysis of planar geared mechanisms in its ability to accurately solve the kinematics of spatial geared mechanisms, particularly bevel gear trains, in a simpler manner. Usefulness of the method is demonstrated through its application to power-flow and efficiency analyses as well as its implementa… Show more

“…One of its applications is used as power systems of elevator. Planetary gear trains were the subject of intensive research directed at kinematic analysis (Tsai,1985;Hsieh et al, 1989;Hsieh and Yan, 1992;Nelson and Cipra, 2005;Tsai and Huang, 2010), kinematic design (Hsieh , 1999;Hsu, 2002;Hwang, and Huang, 2005;Hsieh et al, 2006Hsieh et al, , 2008Karaivanov and Popov, 2008;Lu and.Duan, 2009;Hsieh, andTang, 2012, 2013), efficiency analysis (Castillo, 2002;Chen and Angeles, 2007;Lu and Duan, 2009;Golenko, 2009;Hsieh and Chen, 2011Hsieh andH.C. Tang, 2013, 2014), and patents (Takahashi , 1980;Klinger et al, 2002;Lin and Lin, 2004;Hsieh andChen, 2012, Hsieh et al, 2013).…”

“…This method is more accurate in the efficiency calculation, but it has to deduce complex equations of virtual power for different gear trains. Nelson and Cipra [8] employed graph theory to analyze the velocities of bevel epicyclic gear trains and the method is more suitable to software implementation. del Castillo [9] pointed out that even though the kinematic analysis of mechanisms using graphs has been widely developed by many researchers, a clearer way of understanding the relation between the components and power flow in complex planetary gear trains is still in need.…”

“…In this paper, it is assumed that the only power loss in a multi-flow planetary gear train is from gear meshing and planet bearings. Different graphic methods have been used in power flow analysis in the literature [3,[7][8][9][10]. Esmail and Hassan [3] established a block based on a basic gear pair.…”
