SimSketch: Multiagent Simulations Based on Learner-Created Sketches for Early Science Education

Abstract: This paper presents an approach to create simulations of science phenomena based on sketches. SimSketch, an integrated drawing and modeling tool, allows students to create sketches and apply behaviors to elements of their drawing. A multiagent simulation engine interprets and executes the model, thus building an intuitively usable and motivating learning environment to build and explore simulations of scientific phenomena.

“…Participants filled in a questionnaire on their knowledge of the solar system (multiple-choice test, eight items). Then, they created a drawing of the solar system according to their ideas using SimSketch, the drawing-based modeling program described above (Bollen and van Joolingen 2013). As part of the modeling activity, they were asked to create situations in which solar and lunar eclipses could occur.…”

“…Its generic architecture makes it a powerful software but it could be relatively complex to understand for some students, especially the secondary ones. Another very interesting human-computer interaction is developed in the SimSketch software (Bollen, 2013). In this approach, the user draws the agents using an integrated paint tool then adds a name, a type and different pre-defined behaviours.…”
