Stimulating Students’ Argumentation using Drawing – based Modeling on The Concept of Ecosystem

Abstract: Abstract. Drawing -based modeling as learning approach, it allows students to create models based on drawing which help them to run a simulation. Students can use drawing-based modeling to learn a pair of interacting population known as predato-prey system while they usually conducted practicum using diagram of organisms. This study was to explore students' argumentation and students' understanding on the concept of the ecosystem. The study was conducted quasiexperimental using the matching -only post-test -on… Show more

“…In this case, the physics phenomena in real-life were used as the argumentation trigger. This approach is also related to the findind of other researcher [15]. Some examples of this phenomenon are shown in Figure 2 (insects and surface tension), Figure 3 (on fluid and viscosity).…”

“…Although findings from learning progression areas provide a clear distinction on how students learn food webs and progress throughout their educational years, many researchers studied how appropriate instructional strategies could aid students in seeing more sophisticated relationships in an ecosystem (e.g., Grotzer & Bell, 2003; Lehrer & Schauble, 2012; Nguyen & Santagata, 2021). Notably, Sumarni et al (2017) compared the business‐as‐usual condition to a paper‐based drawing modeling condition and examined the impacts on students' argumentation skills within the food webs unit. The authors found that students in the latter condition produced more coherent arguments (data, warrant, and backing) and had higher increases in their conceptual understanding of food webs.…”

“…Keterampialan argumentasi akan dikembangkan bersama dengan keterampilan berpikir kritis. Keterampilan argumentasi adalah bagian dari pengembangan berpikir tingkat tinggi yang digunakan untuk menganalisis informasi mengenai suatu topik yang nantinya hasil dari analisis akan dikomunikasikan kepada orang lain (Sumarni, et al 2017).…”
