This article presents a design of ultra-high frequency (UHF), ultra-wide band (UWB) antenna used for partial discharge (PD) detection on high voltage and medium voltage power system equipment. The proposed UHF antenna has a working frequency band of 1.2GHz-4.5GHz, covering a total bandwidth of 3.3GHz with a return loss less than -10dB in the entire antenna's operating frequency. The computer simulation technology (CST) Microwave Studio software was used to design, simulate and optimize the proposed antenna. Upon simulation and optimization process, the antenna prototype was fabricated on the FR-4 substrate of 1.6 mm thickness and dielectric permittivity of 4.4. This antenna has a compact size of 100mm x100mm.The radiating patch and the ground plane of this antenna are made of annealed copper whose thickness is 0.035mm. The simulations and measurement results for the proposed antenna are in a good agreement, and the return loss of this antenna is less than -10dB with voltage standing wave ratio, VSWR, < 2 within the frequency range of interest. The proposed antenna performance in PD sensing is compared with a commercial high-frequency current transformer, HFCT. To validate the sensitivity performance of the designed antenna, experimental PD measurements were carried out by using an epoxy slab inserted between two parallel plates electrode model, in order to generate surface discharge on the insulator, and using a needleplate electrode configuration to generate corona discharge in transformer oil. Based on PD measurement results, it was shown that the designed antenna has a high sensitivity, which make it a suitable candidate for UHF partial discharge monitoring on high voltage and medium voltage power assets.INDEX TERMS Surface discharge, corona discharge, UHF antenna, HFCT, UHF PD monitoring.

The mechanisms governing electric field and partial discharge (PD) under stress cone dislocation remain unclear. This study employs the finite element method to explore the relationship between the electric field, externally applied voltage, and length of dislocation. Subsequently, the correlation between voltage and electric field is determined. The relationship between voltage and PD is established through PD tests conducted under stress cone dislocation conditions. By considering the influence of voltage, the association between the electric field and PD is established, revealing the mechanism of PD initiation by electric field distortion in joints. The findings suggest that the lifetime and reliability were increased by wrapping semi‐conductive self‐adhesive tape around the exposed cross‐linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation layer. The electric field at a specific location is approximately proportional to the applied voltage. However, the slope is influenced by the composite insulation interface and the radial distance of the copper conductor. When crossing the interface between the XLPE insulation layer and the accessory insulation layer, the slope decreases significantly. The threshold for electric field PD is determined by examining the electric field distribution and the PD inception voltage during testing. When the voltage is sufficiently high, significant electric field distortions can occur at multiple points in the joint, potentially leading to concurrent PDs at several locations.

A huge amount of exploration propagated over the past decade investigates the characterization of Partial Discharge (PD) inception in cable ideology. Underground cables are passed down as surrogate for over hauling in congested areas. The intention of this research is to examine the feasibility of exploring insulation defects present in High Voltage (HV) Cable setup by employing PD disclosure under alternating current (AC) Voltage. Study of PD characteristics has a congregate of predictable distinguished contraption to prove the probity and the affirmation of electrical insulation of Power System. In this work, the cable is exposed into the measurement of PD signal under artificially conceived defects. PD signal parameters are mainly depends on the size of void and applied voltage. In general, the measured PD signal is depraved with interferences. To identify the exact characteristics of PD distinctive and its severity, the PD signal is subjected to Wavelet Transform (WT) for denoising. Different types of WT families with various level is used for de-noising. To identify the effectiveness of the WT for de-noising guidelines like Signal to Reconstruction Error Ratio (SRER) and Reduction in Noise Level (RNL) are used.
