Simulation of Structure Formation Processes of Dissimilar Steels Welded Joints Using an Intermediate Layer

Abstract: This paper shows the results of solving a 3D problem to define types of structures and tensions which can appear during the butt contact welding process of dissimilar steels through low carbon steel inserts. The finite element method to calculate welded structures was used. The thickness of inserts was the main variable parameter. According to the results of numerical simulation using inserts can increase the reliability of welded joints between pearlitic high-carbon steel and austenitic chromium-nickel steel.… Show more

“…The formation of martensite occurs due to diffusion processes caused by a significant difference in the chemical composition of steels. During welding, the alloying elements Cr and Ni actively diffuse from the local areas with their high content into the surrounding carbon steel [8,15]. The width of the transition region from the visible interface between steels may reach 500 µm.…”

“…The probability of unfavorable structure formation is reduced by the use of the explosion welding technique due to a high speed of the process, but, at the same time, the appearance of mixed zones of welded materials is not excluded [10][11][12][13][14]. Contact welding defects are an intensive mechanical mixing of materials due to the applied load, and diffusion processes [8,[15][16][17]. A complex transition zone of the weld is formed as a result of these effects.…”

“…According to the results of mathematical modeling, cracking occurs most likely in these regions, too. 28,29 Given that railway crossings are subjected to impact and cyclic loading, tests of fatigue crack resistance and impact toughness of the welds were performed.…”

“…This method allows regulating and conducting flash welding at maximum useful power during the welding process [5]. The method of resistance welding is more economical and technologically advanced, as it allows for control of the largest number of technological parameters directly in the production process [6,7].…”
