Simulation of transportation infrastructures resilience: a comprehensive review

Abstract: Despite the increasing simulation methods used by the research of transportation infrastructure resilience in the past decade, a comprehensive review of these simulation methods is lacking. Thus, this paper conducted an in-depth review of the major simulation methods adopted by the existing transportation infrastructure resilience literature, which are Monte Carlo simulation, network-based simulation, numerical simulation, and agent-based modeling and simulation. The four simulation methods were reviewed from … Show more

“…Complex systems are ubiquitous, and, as their operations increasingly take place in contested and dynamic environments, so the need for their resilience becomes critical. 36,38 Modeling and simulation approaches by their nature have become increasingly popular in the analysis of the resilience of complex systems under various attacks and environmental changes, 4,40 with application domains such as energy infrastructures, 41 emergency department planning and analysis, 42 landscape ecology, 43 sociotechnical systems, 44 supply chain management, [45][46][47] and cyber-physical systems (CPS) 48 employing modeling and simulation to study various aspects of resilience. Keane et al 43 proposed the use of discrete event simulation to understand the resilience of emergency departments within hospitals that are facing earthquakes.…”

“…Many works use modeling and simulation to understand the resilience of supply chain and transportation networks. [45][46][47] Wicher et al 47 used a simple disruption profile to show the system's vulnerability to simple disruptions while 46 identifying sustainability factors that can improve resilience. A review of modeling and simulation approaches to study resilience in this domain was given by Dong et al 45 Koutsoukos et al 48 proposed a modeling and simulation framework for the analysis of resilience in CPS, using a smart transportation system as an example.…”

“…Great attention has been paid to the field of infrastructure resilience, and various types of studies related to this field have also emerged, including a few review papers. However, these reviews primarily focus on a specific category of infrastructure or the research methods used in studies of infrastructure resilience [22][23][24], and a comprehensive review of IR-related studies is relatively lacking. This study aims to bridge the knowledge gap by conducting a comprehensive literature review of the existing studies in the field of IR, hence summarizing the major research streams in the area and proposing possible directions for future research.…”

“…By improving sustainable [19][20][21] rail-based mobility, the share of travel with high environmental performance [22][23][24], such as rail transport, collective road transport [25,26], or shared systems, can make a significant contribution to reducing the many negative impacts [27][28][29][30], such as pollutant emissions [31] and climate impacts [32][33][34][35].…”
