Simultaneous and highly sensitive determination of PCBs and PBDEs in environmental water and sediments by gas chromatography coupled to high resolution magnetic sector mass spectrometry

Abstract: A new method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) at ultratrace levels in water and sediment samples by gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution magnetic sector mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS). GC conditions were optimized in order to perform the separation of both families of contaminants in less than 45 min. Extraction procedures based on solid phase extraction (SPE) and ultrasonic extraction were optimized for w… Show more

“…Further explanation of the techniques can be found in the Extraction Procedures section (Supplementary Materials). For sediments, a UAE method, which previously yielded good results, was employed varying the extractant solvent from DCM [44] to hexane/ethyl acetate 9:1 v/v [27]. Each extraction method was subject to recovery trials, spiking samples (n = 3) at 100 µg L −1 (2 mg kg −1 ) with the PAH standard mixture.…”

“…The mixtures of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), polychlorinated dibenzo‐ p ‐dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) are not covered since the analytical methods for their determination have been standardized for a long time. Research in this area within the last 5 years was either focused on enhancement and shortening of a sample treatment step followed by validation for GC–HRMS requirements , or on monitoring of those substances in various regions and matrixes like surface water and soil , breast milk , eel , blood spots from newborns and infants . Unfortunately, there are only limited numbers of papers dealing with the application of HRTOF analyzers for the determination of PCDD/Fs.…”

“…Generally, the most used techniques for the PCBs analysis in environmental water are GC with electron capture detection (ECD) or with MS. But before chromatographic analysis, sample pretreatment step is often required, such as LLE , SPE , solid‐phase disk extraction (SPDE) , SPME , headspace solid‐phase microextraction (HS‐SPME) , stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) , LPME , dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) , ultrasound‐assisted emulsification microextraction (USAEME) , membrane‐assisted solvent extraction (MASE) , dispersive solid‐phase extraction (DSPE) , or magnetic dispersive solid‐phase extraction (m‐DSPE) .…”
