“…Bystrowska et al (2000) have performed the determination of 5-ASA in plasma and urine samples Simultaneous assay of 5-aminosalicylic acid and its metabolite 351 ORIGINAL RESEARCH by liquid chromatography following prior derivatization to its acetylated metabolite. Few procedures have been described for the estimation by liquid chromatography of 5-ASA in human ileocolonic biopsy (De Vos et al, 1992;Palumbo et al, 1995;Hussain et al, 1998;Naganuma et al, 2001). Therefore, the objective of this work is to present a one-step liquid-liquid extraction procedure before simultaneous determination of 5-ASA and its metabolite by HPLC in human plasma.…”

“…Up to now, most common procedures for the determination of 5-ASA in pharmaceutical dosage forms [8,9] and biological fluids [10 -17] were based on chromatographic techniques. Although generally, HPLC is used for the determination of 5-ASA in blood plasma and drug [18,19]. Chromatographic methods need sophisticated equipment or require lengthy extraction and clean-up procedures.…”

“…Despite the fact that it has been used for over 50 years, the mechanism of action of this drug remains uncertain. 5-ASA has been shown to be a potent scavenger of reactive oxygen species that play a significant role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease, inhibition of natural killer cell activity, inhibition of antibody synthesis, inhibition of cyclo-oxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways and impairment of neutrophil function (Geier, Miner, 1992;Palumbo et al, 1995). This drug is unstable under gastric conditions and prone to be absorbed in the upper intestine, which causes low drug bioavailability and low efficiency against inflammatory colon disease.…”
