Simultaneous evaluation of the lamina cribosa position and choroidal thickness changes following deep sclerectomy

Abstract: There was a significant reversal lamina cribrosa displacement measured from Bruch's membrane opening reference despite a significant peripapillary choroidal thickening following deep sclerectomy. Both findings were significantly correlated with the change in intraocular pressure.

“…The increasing dissociation of GON and NAION with disease severity seen with the MRW was not observed for any other OCT parameter. However, consistent with previous reports, our data did show that the LC depth is also a distinguishing factor between NAION and GON in general [ 28 , 29 ]. There was no relationship observed between LC depth and severity of visual field damage in either group.…”

“…6,12 Interestingly, clinical evidence suggests that IOP and choroidal volume themselves may be linked. 45,46 A reduction of IOP via trabeculectomy or deep sclerectomy has been shown to cause a subsequent change in choroidal thickness. Thus, studies aimed at understanding the interaction of IOP and choroid volume and their combined influence on ONH biomechanics will be critical in the future.…”

“…Furthermore, IOP-lowering treatment may induce change in the LC morphology in glaucomatous eyes. [18][19][20][21][22] Therefore, we compared LC morphology between eyes in treatment-naive NTG patients with unilateral damage in an attempt to elucidate whether LC strain is related to the pathogenesis of NTG.…”
