Simultaneous Huge Splenic and Mesenteric Hydatid Cyst

Abstract: Hydatid disease (HD) is caused by Echinococcus granulosus and is endemic in many parts of the world. This parasitic tapeworm can produce cysts in almost every organ of the body, with the liver and lung being the most frequently targeted organs. The spleen and mesentery are unusual locations. We report a case of simultaneous huge splenic and mesenteric hydatid cyst in a 91-year-old male patient. The patient was presented with chronic abdominal pain, increased frequency of defecation, and typical history of anim… Show more

“…Humans are mostly infected by Echinococcosis Granulosus species. The Sheep farming and Cattle farming areas such as Mediterranean Sea, Asia North and East Africa, South America, Australia and the Middle East are the regions in which most cases of this parasite are found [3] . Two hosts are inhabited by parasites during its lifecycle: a definitive host (usually a dog) and an intermediate host such as humans [3] , [4] .…”

“…In this case, the patient was advised to use albendazole to prevent recurrences as much as possible. So far, few cases of hydatid cysts presenting simultaneously in the spleen and other organs and body areas in different people have been reported as case reports [ 15 , 16 ]. Therefore, given the importance of the issue and the importance of paying attention to this disease, we have reported another case in this article.…”

“…They are usually caused by the rupture of this primary cyst [10]. Either primary or secondary, these cysts are considered as a significant manifestation of the disease (13%) [3]. Primary mesenteric cysts of Echinococcus granulosus account for 2% of all abdominal hydatidosis [11].…”

“…Secondary cysts can be seen at any anatomical site including every solid organ, vertebra, mesentery and soft tissues [3]. Intraperitoneal hydatid cysts are commonly secondary to the rupture of a primary liver cyst and primary mesenteric hydatid cyst is very rarely encountered [1][2][3]. In this case report, we aimed to report a giant primary mesenteric cyst in a male patient who was treated surgically and diagnosed as hydatid disease following histopathological evaluation.…”
