Simultaneous Stochastic Optimization of Mining Complexes and Mineral Value Chains

Abstract: Recent developments in modelling and optimization approaches for the production of mineral and energy resources have resulted in new simultaneous stochastic optimization frameworks and related digital technologies. A mining complex is a type of value chain whereby raw materials (minerals) extracted from various mineral deposits are transformed into a set of sellable products, using the available processing streams. The supply of materials extracted from a group of mines represents a major source of uncertainty… Show more

“…Among other examples, Goodfellow and Dimitrakopoulos (2017) describe an approach that integrates sources of uncertainties arising from the combined production of several mines. The in-situ orebody uncertainties are integrated with process uncertainties from extraction to processing to marketing as the basis of modelling and stochastically optimising the value chain of a mining complex.…”

“…Gaussian geostatistics only delivers that correctly in a Gaussian random field setting. Like with strategic mine planning (Dimitrakopoulos 2011;Goodfellow and Dimitrakopoulos 2017), non-linear simulation methods better reproducing the conditional distributions would thus be more appropriate for geometallurgical optimisation. However so far (April 2017), beyond single categorical variables, no case studies could show the added value of MPS methods in the context of geometallurgy.…”

“…If the processing model is good enough to predict the value as a function of the processing choices, it can be used in conjunction with a geostatistical description of the geometallurgical ore properties to optimize the processing itself either for the whole deposit or each block (optimal adaptive processing) (Turner-Saad 2011;. Goodfellow and Dimitrakopoulos (2017) shows how blending, strategic mine planning and routing can be optimized together. The optimizability, i.e.…”

“…A mining complex is an integrative logistic network that represents the extraction, transportation and transformation of materials between their sources, open-pit and underground mines, and final products delivered to the commodity market [1][2][3][4]. New technological advancements in strategic mine planning and optimisation simultaneously consider all the components of a mining complex, including multiple mines, processors, stockpiles, and waste facilities, in a single optimisation framework with uncertain raw material supply [1,2]. These advancements provide an integrative approach that can be adapted to accurately consider waste as a mining product and manage the uncertain quantity and quality of waste produced, thus minimise potential environmental impacts and assist rehabilitation.…”
