Single-Center Review of Fluoroscopy-Guided Percutaneous Nephrostomy Performed by Urologic Surgeons

Abstract: Percutaneous nephrostomy is a relatively safe, minimally invasive, and effective procedure with a low rate of morbidity. Our overall results in term of success rate and major complications are within the threshold limits set by the SIR and ACR. Hence, trained urologists can produce results similar to those of interventional radiologists. Learning of PCN should be mandatory in the training curriculum for all urology residents.

“…This finding is similar to what has been reported in literature. 9,10 In fact, although 99% of the patients in this study received prophylactic antibiotics before undergoing nephrostomy, the frequency of pyelonephritis (19%) was higher than that previously reported by Skolarikos et al (1.1%), 2 Rana et al (2.5%), 3 and Radecka and Magnusson (14%). 4 Given the poor and lax definition previously assigned to UTIs occurring in patients with nephrostomy, a well-defined case of nephrostomy tube related pyelonephritis in this study reveals a major problem threatening patients with cancer.…”

“…3,4 Among complications, blood loss necessitating transfusion is one of the most important complications, because, rarely, hemorrhage cannot be controlled, and an angioembolization or nephrectomy is needed. [18][19] Severe bleeding necessitating blood transfusion was observed in 7.1% of patients who underwent PCNL in the present study.…”

“…Since that time, this technique has been performed for more and more patients with a variety of obstructive or nonobstructive uropathy (2)(3)(4). PCN has been used for several situations, such as diverting urine from the renal collecting system in cases of ureteropelvic junction or ureteral obstruction (5). Moreover, PCN may provide an opportunity for later reconstructive surgery for fistula or postoperative complications, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, double-J stent placement, or chemotherapy to treat urothelial carcinomas of the upper urinary tract in some cases (5)(6)(7).…”
